Deal that could make postal strikes history

Postal disputes could be a thing of the past - if Royal Mail delivers its settlement promises, a union representative for Ulster's postal workers has said.

Lawrence Huston, Northern Ireland Regional Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), was speaking after the terms of a deal with Royal Mail were endorsed by the organisation last week.

The new two-year settlement on pay, terms and conditions - which includes a pay rise - received the backing of 64% of those who participated in a CWU ballot.

But the majority ratification should not, said Mr Huston, be seen as a green light for the introduction of sweeping changes without agreement.

"How these measures are introduced will be crucial to the long-term success or failure of the agreement," he said.

"Any railroading tactics will simply not be tolerated."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said that the company was pleased with the results that ensued from recent negotiations.

"The agreement sets out the process by which Royal Mail will achieve the changes essential to the future of our business and we look forward to the CWU's full support," she said.

"The 'yes' vote shows strong backing from postmen and women and is excellent news for our customers, our people and our business."

Without doubt, the recent bitter postal dispute - which crippled regional services on a number of occasions throughout this year - was difficult to resolve.

Now, however, industry experts believe that the onus is on both Royal Mail management and the Communication Workers Union in Northern Ireland to introduce the changes to working patterns and attendance in a sensible manner.

Mr Huston said that proposals must meet both the needs of the business - and the aspirations of union members.

"The CWU is determined to ensure our members get a fair deal," he said.
