Royal Mail make special deliveries

ROYAL Mail workers have been making deliveries out of hours in a bid to clear the parcel backlog at its Calvin Street depot in Bolton.

Scores of people have been queing for parcels at the Royal Mail offices, often waiting hours.

Customers complained that many parcels could not be found and the Royal Mail has apologised for the delays, saying a rise in the number of Christmas gifts being ordered over the internet might be to blame.

Extra drivers delivered parcels to the homes of customers over the weekend. More drivers were making extra deliveries outside of normal hours from 4pm yesterday evening.

Among those to benefit from the deliveries is Julia Applegate, aged 51, of Bromley Cross, who was turned away from the Calvin Street office on Saturday after being informed that she would not be able to reach the front of the queue in the 90-minutes before the depot was due to close.

She was delighted when a Royal Mail employee arrived at her home one day later with her parcel and apologies for the delay.

Julia said: "The driver said that post staff were working on Sunday because they were trying to clear the backlog and were delivering up until 8pm. I've seen Royal Mail being criticised by everyone but I thought this really made a change and I'd like to compliment them."

But not all customers were as happy and many were unaware of the new measures. Margaret Koppens, aged 67, of Astley Bridge, decided not to wait after seeing the number of people queueing. She said she was not able to wait for long and thought there should be more information provided for people waiting.

A Royal Mail spokesman said customers wishing to arrange a redelivery could call 01204 517752. Parcels can be redirected to a nearer post office for a 50p charge.
