Locals in St Agnes Road were stunned to find the 110-year-old box smashed to pieces
An historic red postbox which has stood outside a Birmingham church for more than 100 years has been destroyed in a mystery attack.
Locals in St Agnes Road, Moseley, were stunned to find the cast iron box smashed to pieces on Wednesday evening.
It was stood on the junction of Colmore Crescent, in front of the picturesque St Agnes Church.
Peter Leadbetter, chairman of the St Agnes Residents’ Association, posted pictures of the destroyed postbox on Twitter and said it would be a loss to the designated conservation area.
The 65-year-old psychologist said: “It’s completely smashed into four or five pieces, we have lost a bit of history.
“A lot of people have been in touch with me saying how upset they are.
“I know it won’t be replaced like-for-like. We feel that our area has been deprived of a special feature.”
Mr Leadbetter said he suspected a car may have been involved.
“I thought it had been hit by something quite heavy, it must have been hit with some force,” he said.
“There were tyre tracks because it was snowy. What has clearly happened is that they have driven away.
“I’m amazed that no one was hurt because it is a solid, heavy item."
Elliot Brown, who had taken a picture of the postbox before it was destroyed, tweeted: “The post box used to look like this! Can’t believe it was destroyed! Was an Edward VII box.”
West Midlands Police said the incident had been reported, but said no further action was planned.
Royal Mail was unavailable for comment.
