A Suffolk postman was bid an emotional farewell today at a surprise presentation recognising his near 30 years of service on the same delivery round.
Fred Sparrow, 64, has been delivering to homes and businesses in the centre of Framlingham ever since 1988.
This morning, to congratulate him on his well deserved retirement, he was given a surprise presentation by some of his long-standing customers and friends, who wanted to wish him well after 29 years of service.
Mr Sparrow, who had not been expecting the show of gratitude, said he was touched by the support.
“It was a bit emotional because it’s only towards the end you realise that you’re actually retiring,” he said.
“I’ve really enjoyed being the postman in Framlingham all these years - they are all very nice people around here.
“There are still people I deliver to today that I did on my first round 29 years ago.
“Once you get started, you get to know the people quite well.”
Christopher Hudson, one of Framlingham’s district councillors, gave a speech praising Mr Sparrow during the presentation, which took place in the stationery shop in Market Hill.
“I was delighted to be invited to make the presentation in Framlingham this morning to Fred,” Mr Hudson said.
“Fred represents all that is best in Framlingham – service, friendship and good humour.”
Others attending the presentation have also paid their respects to the long-serving postman.
Geraldine Smith, who helped organise the presentation, said Mr Sparrow was “much loved by the community” and will be “sorely missed”.
Framlingham Town Council’s Stephanie Bennell also attended the presentation and later paid tribute to his “impressive” service to the town.
Mr Sparrow, who also lives in Framlingham, will set off to make his final deliveries around the town tomorrow.
Andrew Walne, one of Mr Sparrow’s colleagues at the Post Office in Riverside said there was another celebration planned for him before he sets out on his last round.
Mr Sparrow, a grandfather of four, said he was looking forward to spending time with his family during his retirement.
