Royal Mail warms to sorting office relocation plan

PROPOSALS to redevelop the Great Malvern Post Office site have taken a step closer to becoming reality.

Great Malvern Town Centre Partnership believes the Abbey Road site could become an important asset for the town centre.

Royal Mail directors have visited the area and relocation is now believed to be much higher on the agenda.

Richard Hall, from the company, confirmed ongoing discussions were taking place.

"No decisions have been made but it is something we are considering, and we are exploring the other options available to us," he said.

While Royal Mail would be happy to move the delivery office out of town, any decision on redeveloping the site could hinge on finding an alternate town centre location for a Post Office itself.

Malvern Hills District Council's economic development manager Simon Smith said talks were progressing.

He added there were no firm proposals for what the site could become.

"There have been a whole host of things talked about but the main thing is that we would want something that would contribute to the town centre," he said. "That may well mean some retail use on the ground floor or there has been a suggestion that the site could be redeveloped as an attraction in its own right. If someone were to come in, we would not let them just build a block of flats there for example."
