A lot of this is very familiar when i started in the 80s, the old civil service hierarchical structure was still there, old timers v newbies and the usual seniority gripes (some things don't change) , we were still using wicker baskets then, local mechanic workshops, job was easy then mind you the Linos knew all the tricks as they worked their way up from the ranks, if you messed up, you were bollocked there and then and that was the end of it all off the record, you still had the odd sly ones, nothing changed since then, money was a bit crap, it was however secure and you can make some money up with overtime, there was the promise of a good pension at the end of it.
They were the good old days, I'm glad I experienced it, nostalgia heaven.
