Royal Mail is in talks with an unnamed developer to sell off its derelict Barrack Road sorting office.
But safety officials at the firm say it is unlikely the site will be sealed off because part of the facility is still being used by postal workers.

Royal Mail spokesman Richard Hall said: "We are talking with a party about the sale of Barrack Road. We can't go into any detail at the moment because it is commercially sensitive, but it remains our plan to dispose of the site.

"In the meantime, we are not able to barricade the whole site because we still have operations taking place at the back of the building.

"The building itself is secure and we have ad-hoc security patrols so if we see anything untoward, we will report it to the police.

"If local residents have any concerns or notice any suspicious activity at the site, I would advise them to do the same."

West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC), the body set up by the Government to spearhead Northampton's housing expansion, has confirmed it is looking for developers to refurbish the site as a mixed-use development.

This could mean a combination of residential, retail, leisure and business buildings.
