After Royal Mail staff discovered a parcel containing cannabis police went to the home of a 23-year-old man and found more drugs.

John Thornbury, Ashgrove Drive, Lurgan, admitted two charges when he appeared last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He was fined £250 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy for unlawful possession of a class B drug, cannabis on July 20 this year. For attempting to unlawfully have in his possession cannabis on July 1 he was fined £150.

The court heard that on July 1 police were notified by the Royal Mail sorting office that they had intercepted a parcel which had a strong smell of cannabis coming from it.

The parcel, which was addressed to the defendant, contained three grams of the drug. A search was carried out at his home and two grams of cannabis were located.

Thornbury said to police: “Are you trying to say I am a drug dealer.” He made admissions saying he had made arrangements for the drugs to be mailed through the post and he intended to smoke the cannabis himself.

The defendant also indicated he had bought the other cannabis from a person in Lurgan and again intended to smoke it himself.

A solicitor representing the defendant said the comments at the scene arose out of embarrassment as he lived with his parents.

Cannabis has never really been my thing to be honest. Makes me want to go to sleep. I think it helps 'buzzy' people slow down a bit - but I'm not 'buzzy', I'm pretty laid back/borderline lethargic by nature so it doesn't do much for me. I once had a really good laugh with it when a friend of mine hot knived some Nepalese about 25 years ago - but that was the exception to the rule TBH.
I couldn't count the number of people I have known and do know that smoke cannabis that function as well as anyone else in society - and for the large part better than average.

Heroin - less so.

How many people do you know whose lives have been ruined by cannabis ?

Not to be argumentative but Cannabis can save lives. Medical Cannabis is used to reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, to improve appetite in people with HIV/AIDS, and to treat chronic pain and muscle spasms. There are also trials ongoing that indicate it may help with Epilepsy and reduce the risk of strokes. The down side is that those at risk of schizophrenia appear to increase that risk if they use Cannabis recreationally.

The one thing that is rarely mentioned in the debate over cannabis is that according to a Delphic analysis by British researchers in 2007, cannabis has a lower risk factor for dependence compared to both nicotine and alcohol.

Even though alcohol is legal it's possible to overdose on it, cannabis on its own, it's almost impossible to overdose, unless you smoke between 238 and 1,113 joints in a day. (taking that the fatal dose for TCH is between 15 and 70 grams.

Apparently, according to some studies, alcoholics are more likely to be violent towards partners than Pot Heads.

Personally, while it's illegal I won't use it, but I would have no objection to it being legalised and sold openly with the same controls and limits that alcohol has.

TBT,
Not to be argumentative but Heroin can save lives. Heroin, better known medically as Morphine, is widely used as a very effective painkiller - as I know from personal experience. :nana :Applause :nana
Not so sure about cannabis though. :cuppa

Assuming both are for personal use you can either take the position that it's none of your business or you can take the position that both are illegal and you should report it, both are valid positions but choosing one over the other seems a little self indulgent.

Fair point FT. It has to be said that the stuff that will pass thru RM will often be bought and sold via 'dark markets' (a 'Dark Market' is really a euphemism for a free unencumbered market). There is a fair argument that says that heroin sold under these conditions - the quality of which effectively is 'audited' via a trust and reputation system (much like ebay) - is far safer than stuff garnered from the street and has none of the attendant expoitation and violence that comes with it.

But personally I have a big aversion to heroin. Makes slaves of people and ruins communities. Had a couple of friends die from it years back.
Comparing it to cannabis is like comparing a pea shooter to a Kalashnikov.
I don't like the stuff - I never will. I would feel like I were doing a favour to the prospective recipient by handing the stuff over to security. Not so with cannabis.
And yes - TBT made a good post. Many people with all kinds of conditions have to resort to dark markets in order to acquire cannabis for legitimate medical reasons. IIRC the guy that Ross Ulbricht (allegedly) took as his second in command (the Silk Road) was one such person.

Anyhow, its a big topic and ultimately its a personal choice as to how you respond/what you see and what you don't see (or smell) whilst in the employ of RMG.

Having recently having some in my family only this year die of heroin use, heroin is dangerous. She would have been 40 this year.

As for your question, quite a few people I've worked on mental health wards with older and younger adults. A lot of the younger generation smoke too much of it and become paranoid.

Some become psychotic by seeing or hearing things that aren't there. Some have to be sectioned under the mental health act against their will, because they are a danger to themselves or others. They like to treat you like a punch bag and you have to be taking them down by rugby tackling them to the floor or all piling on top them.

One of the worst things I saw that a patient had done under the influence of cannabis was that he took a serrated knife and cut one his balls off. He was psychotic and was told to do this by the devil.
