Postman halts city centre trams after parking van on double yellow lines

A postman who brought the city’s Metrolink service to a halt after parking on double yellows has been slapped with a £100 fine and three points.

GMP Traffic say the Royal Mail employee had stopped on Cross Street on Saturday morning to ‘run an errand’ and in doing so blocked the tram line for around 20 minutes.

By the time he returned to the vehicle, there were two double trams stuck behind unable to get past, as well as a queue of traffic.

PCSO Gareth Walker said the driver was issued with a TOR (traffic offence report) on the spot.

He said: “We had been on patrol when we noticed congestion near to the Town Hall so we went over to see what was happening.

“Two double trams were blocking the full length of Cross Street, right down to King Street.

“A Royal Mail vehicle was at a set of lights stopping trams from moving. Other vehicles were having to go towards oncoming trams to get past it.”

PCSO Walker said that the postman had been ‘running an errand’ nearby, and says there was a loading bay just around the corner which he could’ve used instead.

Its inconsiderate behaviour, the "errand" is probably to grab a paper and a sandwich, I have the feeling this is an unofficial stop as an offical drop would have been risk assessed and a defined location made available.

Just parking next to a tram line is plain stupid as they can't drive round obstacles.

Not liking anyone to be sacked, but a warning to others.
An errand is usually understood to be a short journey undertaken in order to deliver or collect something especially on someone else's behalf and we're meant to deliver or collect something only on Royal Mail''s behalf.
We wish him or her well but running an errand and the "plain stupid" obstruction of a busy tram line doesn't bode well.

Yes, indeed, especially as I though Mancunians were known for having initiative,
and surely there were enough fit tram passengers in too much of a hurry to waste twenty minutes so that several of them could have easily bounced the van out of the way with no trouble, or risk of injury, at all.
I don't know what this country's coming to.

surely If its in the city centre they should be double red lines, not yellow, then giving the authorities the right to away the offending vehicle.

Red Routes are only used in London and the West Midlands.
