Dumfries posties could stage strike action in support of a sacked colleague.
Staff at the town’s Great King Street office are furious after a postman with 28 years’ service was fired by Royal Mail.
They claim his dismissal was too harsh a punishment for delaying the delivery of customers’ mail.
Members of the Communication Workers Union met in the Cairndale Hotel on Friday and decided to seek a ballot on industrial action.
Staff could walk out early next month if union bosses approve their request.
One worker told the Standard: “We will decide what our next move is once we find out if our friend is successful at an employment tribunal.
“As well as the unjustified sacking of a loyal member of staff, we also don’t like the way things are being handled in there.
“We’re not happy about the changes management are trying to impose but we’ve gotten nowhere trying to go through the internal complaints procedures.”
Around 60 members attended last Friday’s meeting and unanimously backed a request for a ballot for industrial action.
The worker added: “If the ballot goes ahead, there could be a ban on overtime or an all-out strike. “We’re hoping things are resolved before it comes to that.
“Our customers come first but they already know the service is suffering.
“We are the ones paying the price of Royal Mail being privatised a few years ago but we can’t sit back and let them treat our colleague in the unfair way they have.”
CWU branch secretary Jim McKechnie confirmed the meeting took place and that members would be requesting a ballot for industrial action.
He said: “There is a process we need to go through and there’s nothing I can say until the paperwork requesting a ballot has been submitted to the CWU headquarters.”
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the company is “disappointed” with the situation in Dumfries delivery office.
She added: “We are continuing to talk to our people and the CWU about this matter. A ballot for industrial action does not mean that any action will take place.
“Royal Mail has been transforming its business to increase the efficiency of its operation. As a commercial business, it is responding to the huge growth in electronic communications and decline in letter volumes, while seeing a high volume of parcels and online shopping which need to be delivered to customers in a competitive market.”
