775M Paddington Cube gets green light

Westminster City Council has granted planning permission to transform Paddington’s Bakerloo line and station as part of a £775M proposal for the redevelopment of a former Royal Mail sorting office site.

The plans for Paddington Cube, submitted by Great Western Developments (GWD), include upgrading the Bakerloo line station and ticket hall, which forms part of a proposed £65M investment in public realm and transport infrastructure by the developer.

WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff has been selected as the full multidisciplinary engineer for the project.

The scheme includes further improvements to the Network Rail station, as well as offices, restaurants and a new public piazza complete with £2M worth of public art.

Approval follows months of negotiations and the plans secured the support of many key stakeholders including Network Rail, Transport for London (TfL), NHS and the Greater London Authority (GLA).


The proposal covers plans for the construction of a new road, to be funded by (GWD), which will maintain full and direct ambulance access to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital.

“Paddington is the front door of our city for many visitors with vital rail connections linking London to the country and the world. The Cube development will create the infrastructure we need to build a brighter future for this part of Westminster,” said Westminster Council deputy leader Robert Davis.

“It is a big, ambitious project that secures a £65M investment in public space and transport infrastructure and will create around 4,000 new jobs.”
