COPS CALLED AS QUEUES CAUSE CHAOS AT DUNDEE AMAZON DEPOT

Police were called to a restaurant car park after huge queues of delivery vans sparked chaos at Dundee’s Amazon depot.

A snaking line of white vans blocked the route out of the car park at Riverside Inn, which is along the road from the online retailer’s premises off Riverside Drive, prompting staff to raise concerns.

There were also said to be problems on Riverside Drive and Riverside Avenue as vans waited to turn off the main roads into the side street.

Since earlier this year, drivers say they have been collecting goods off the back of lorries situated at the site.

But as of Friday, delivery staff were going inside the depot to collect goods which, combined with the rush for Black Friday and Christmas, lengthened the time it was taking to load up vans and leave the site.

Drivers’ only option was to start queuing into the Riverside Inn access road and car park.

One staff member at the restaurant, who declined to be named, confirmed that the matter had been reported to police — saying the situation had been progressively getting worse over the last month.

Officers were in attendance on Friday and were seen speaking to drivers and restaurant staff.

The Riverside Inn worker added: “This is beginning to seriously affect business.

“Who would be bothered trying to come into the car park when they have to join the massive queue of white vans that are coming off at the same exit to our hotel?”

The depot is run by Amazon Logistics, which uses independent couriers to deliver parcels in and around Dundee seven days a week.

One of the drivers told the Tele: “This has been happening for some time now.

“I spend half my day waiting to get into the distribution depot these days. However, this is worse than normal. All the drivers are completely fed up.”

Another driver said that the queue was the worst he had seen, although it had been getting worse on a daily basis.

He added: “This is the first day the depot itself has opened and it’s causing chaos.

“I think this could be a sign of things to come in the lead up to both Black Friday and Christmas. Tempers are fraying and the police have obviously been called.”

An Amazon spokeswoman said: “We take seriously any concerns raised about congestion around the building and are working to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.”
