A postman has been sacked after he was accused of stealing “thousands of letters” in Dundee.

Paul Heaney, 37, was allegedly caught carrying out the thefts following an internal investigation by Royal Mail bosses.

Heaney had been employed at the Dundee West delivery office in Baird Avenue.

It’s understood he was confronted about the claims by company investigators while on his round in Dens Road.

Royal Mail has confirmed that it will now send a report on the allegations to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, who will then decide whether or not to bring any criminal charges.

One postman, who asked not to be named, told the Tele that Heaney had been accused of stealing thousands of mail items, although Royal Mail said it could not confirm the number of items allegedly stolen. The postal worker added: “They allegedly caught him on Dens Road, before he started his round.

“It should be more public. It’s disgraceful. The people of Dundee should know about this.

“It’s the actions of just a small few who give us all a bad name.

“We’re really unhappy — we haven’t been told anything about what happened and it feels like it’s being covered up.

“We’re a team who work very hard and are very honest.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail.

“Royal Mail will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust and will be doing so in this case.

“While we cannot comment on the detail of individual disciplinary cases, we can confirm that the postman in question is no longer employed by Royal Mail.

“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women.”

Mr Heaney could not be reached for comment.
