Emergency Crews called to Gosport Sorting Office

A number of emergency services have been called to the Royal Mail sorting office in Mill Road, Gosport, this morning.

Crews from Gosport, Fareham Cosham and a DIM unit from Winchester were called to the incident after purple liquid oozed on to the floor of the sorting room. It was first reported that two workers were overcome by the fumes but this is incorrect.

Tests were carried out on the liquid and it was found to be alloyed wheel cleaner that had reacted to metal and turned purple.

Special emergency crews from Winchester along with a Chemical Incident Unit set up within the car park of the sorting office as roads were cordoned off around the area.

Forty staff were evacuated from the office whilst crews examined the package.

Shortly after 1pm, a HAZMAT officer emerged from the premises carrying a clear plastic bag with a white cylinder tube inside.

Emergency crews from ambulance and fire remain at the scene.

Customers in the Gosport are being advised that the mail is likely to be delayed as a result of the incident.
