A PROPOSAL to relocate a war memorial from inside Aberystwyth’s under-threat Crown Post Office has been labelled “sacrilege”.
The bronze plaque is dedicated to the men of the Aberystwyth Postal District who lost their lives in the First World War.
Concerns about its future were raised before a public meeting was held on Friday at the Morlan Centre as part of a consultation process into plans to relocate the post office from Great Darkgate Street to WH Smith on Terrace Road.
The Post Office said the memorial will be handled “with care and sensitivity” when the relocation takes place in November.
Roger Gale, general manager of the Post Office Crown and W H Smith network, said: “A war memorial is located in Aberystwyth Post Office branch dedicated to those of our colleagues who worked for the organisation when it was known as the General Post Office, which included what is now Royal Mail.
“We are working with Royal Mail to identify the most appropriate place to relocate the memorial to so that members of the public can continue to pay their respects to those of our colleagues who sacrificed their lives."
