Post deliveries suspended to Meltham area where dog viciously attacked postman

Royal Mail has suspended deliveries to the area of Meltham where a young postman was viciously attacked by a dog on Friday.

The postal worker, named locally as Jack and said to be in his 20s, was attacked for several minutes as he delivered mail in Golcar Brow Road.

The dog clamped onto his arm and wouldn’t let go of its grip until a man called Robert Dickinson of nearby Copley Avenue hit it with a shovel.

The victim was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he underwent emergency surgery to his injured arm and is now recovering from the attack.

Today the Examiner revealed that the same dog attacked postman Jason Lee in July 2013 when he had chunks of flesh and muscle torn from his arm.

Following that incident the Royal Mail suspended deliveries to 120 addresses in the Meltham area.

Ivar Smethurst, Business manager at Meltham Post Office in Huddersfield Road, said: “I think the workers want reassurances about this dog. I don’t think they are happy.

“Mail has not been delivered to the Copley Avenue area since the incident.

“I have had enquiries from residents about why mail has not been coming.”

But he said Parcel Force has now started delivering again.

And the deputy mayor of Meltham Town Council has demanded to know why the dog which savaged Mr Lee three years ago was allowed to attack again.

Clr Jean Wrathall (Ind), said: “I’m absolutely appalled at what has happened.

“What appals me most is that this has happened before and nothing has been done as regards the dog.

“It’s not the first time this has happened in this area. Twenty years ago a post lady in Wessenden Head Road was attacked and she never worked again.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail has suspended deliveries to a number of addresses in the Copley Avenue area. We apologise for the inconvenience to any customers affected.

"We are working with the police to resolve the situation and ensure that our postmen and women can deliver the mail safely.

"In the meantime customers can collect their mail at Holmfirth Delivery Office in Station Road."
