Family of lady who died while refuelling in Frome pay tribute to paramedics and staff

The family of a lady who died of an aneurysm while refuelling her post office van at a petrol station in Frome have paid tribute to staff at store.

Cheryl Butterfield had just finished her post round on Friday, May 20 at around 5pm and was going to refuel her post office van at the Sainsbury's petrol station in Wessex Fields.

While refuelling she sadly suffered an aneurysm with paramedics, a private ambulance and an air ambulance team all called out to the scene.

Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene Cheryl could not be revived. It was revealed in a Coroner's report that she had died as she fell and thus would not have suffered.


Cheryl had lived in Frome for nearly all her life and for the past 18 to 20 years had been a worked for the Royal Mail in Frome with time mainly spent in the Witham Friary area.

Her sister said that not only had Cheryl been the post person at the petrol station, she was also known as a friend to all the staff.

Ms Brigden said: "This was shown within the floral tributes which adorned the fence there for some four weeks from the time she passed until June 14 which was her funeral.

"When I asked if they wanted me to come and take them down, the response was ' Please let us look after them, we will take them down after her funeral

"This type of feeling was shown throughout as her funeral at Witham confirmed with the church filled to overflowing and standing room only.

"The whole village came to say goodbye along with a guard of honour being formed by her colleagues at Frome sorting office and then with a round of applause when she was carried from the church."


Wishing to thank the paramedics and staff of the fuelling station Ms Brigden said that thank you seemed inadequate.

She said: "Despite all of your brave and courageous efforts, my sister couldn't be revived. We later found out via the Coroner's report that she had sadly passed as she fell and wouldn't have suffered in any way.

"This is a small consolation in such sad circumstances but one you must all take heart from.

"We, as a family are slowly coming to terms with what has happened but we also feel comforted to know she was surrounded by people who not only cared about her, you also tried so hard to spare us from the pain we are suffering.

"Thank you seems such an inadequate thing to say, but it's all we can do at this time."

Ms Butterfield's funeral was held at The Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Witham Friary on Tuesday, June 14 at 11.30am. Donations were taken for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.
