Japan Post embarrassed after passerby spots open post box in Chiba

Japan Post has been on the receiving end of some flak from Japanese media this week after a passerby took a photo of an open post box with a key inserted in it.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on June 30, when a postman collecting letters from a post box in Yotsukaido city, Chiba Prefecture, stepped away for a few minutes to store the items at a nearby parked car, leaving the box open with his key inserted in it, Fuji TV reported.

A passerby is believed to have taken the photo in the meantime, before the postman returned to lock the post box.

A spokesman for Japan Post expressed the company’s regret over the incident, telling the media that the postman was not following the company’s rules and should have locked the post box before leaving the scene.

No mail was lost in the incident, Japan Post said.
