Contin delivers fond farewell to postman

A ROSS-SHIRE community turned out in force to say a fond farewell to their local postman who had become a firm friend to many of his customers over the years.

Contin man Donald Greig (60), who retired from the post office after 26 years, was looked upon by many villagers as one of the last traditional Scottish posties.

Elaina Hermitage, secretary of the Contin Community Trust, who helped organise a farewell tea party in the village hall for Mr Greig, told the Ross-shire Journal: “The hall was actually packed, it was virtually standing room only. People from all corners of his round came out to say goodbye.”

She added: “Donnie had to have his arm twisted to turn up for the tea party in the first place. He didn’t know anything about the presention we were going to make, it was a complete surprise – he was left speechless.”

Local resident, Calum MacDonald, of Runrig fame, made a speech thanking Mr Greig for looking after his many customers and being their friend.

He had offered a good customer service, he said, which helped make the community strong.

Mr MacDonald also pointed out that in isolated and dispersed communities, like Contin, the postman is quite often the only person some people see in a week.

He concluded, the “next postie” has a lot to live up to.

Mr Greig was presented with a new strimmer and a chain-saw.

It looks as if he has no intention of putting his feet up quite yet.
