Royal Mail to close Cottingham delivery office in Malmo

The Royal Mail is closing its Cottingham delivery office after it decided to move operations to Malmo Road in Hull.

The firm claims the move, on Monday, May 23, is part of an "ongoing transformation" of its business and will not lead to job losses. A neighbouring Post Office at the site in Finkle Street will be unaffected, the Mail understands.

Royal Mail said the move was set to "increase the efficiency" of its operations and provide delivery offices that are "fit for purpose" for staff and customers. It says there will be no impact on deliveries to customers.

But Maureen Nicholson, 63, of Finkle Street, uses the delivery office and says she is disappointed to hear it is closing.

She said: "It will costs a lot more money to go into Hull because it is petrol for the car, and what about the people who live here who haven't got transport? Because Cottingham is getting bigger, we shouldn't be losing this service anyway.

"If you are waiting for something on a weekend and it comes on a Friday and you don't get back until late, you are not going to get it on a Saturday, are you? If you are back at 5.30pm, how are you going to get it delivered?

"There must be a cut-off point in some time in the day. You might need that at 9am on Saturday. I don't think we should lose it. It really is well used."

Royal Mail says people will not need to travel to Malmo Road delivery office to pick up undelivered items of mail. Instead, they will be able to arrange a free redelivery.

Margaret Taylor, 78, of Beechdale, said it was a shame to lose the service. She said: "It won't affect me, but there's such a lot of people in the village who don't drive. It would very much be out of the way to go on buses to Malmo Road. I do feel sorry for the people it will affect."

The Malmo Road delivery office will have increased opening hours of 7am to 6.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 7am to 8pm on Wednesday and 7am to 2pm on Saturday.

Julie Pirone, director of external relations at Royal Mail, argued it should not have a negative impact on the people of Cottingham or the staff that work there.

"It is increasing those hours and making it easier to park," she said. "Royal Mail has a free delivery service. We deliver six days a week free of charge.

"We will redeliver it the day the customer wants. We do try to deliver to a neighbour now. We hope people are not concerned because it will improve the service."

A spokeswoman for the company said it is responding to changes in the way people send mail. She said: "As a commercial business, Royal Mail is responding to the huge growth in electronic communications and decline in letter volumes."
