Parcel delivery hits low note for Eurovision fans

A couple awarded the Royal Mail delivery service in Newark nul points after it gave their Eurovision hoodie to the wrong person.

Mrs Heather Price, of Whitfield Street, Newark, ordered the £50 official merchandise for the annual European song competition from an online shop based in Germany.

After an unsuccessful attempt was made to deliver the parcel to Mrs Price’s home a card was left, asking her to collect it from the Pelham Street delivery office.

However, when Mrs Price and her husband, Duncan, both Eurovision fans, went to the office they discovered the hoodie had been handed to someone else by mistake.

Mr Price said: “We were told a boy went in with a (failed delivery) red card. The person behind the counter signed it, got the identification and gave out the wrong parcel.

“All we can do now is hope the person returns to collect the right package.”

Mr Price said the company that supplied the hoodie could not offer a refund or replacement as its records showed a signature that gave the impression of a successful delivery.

“It felt like everyone was trying to pass the problem to someone else but not a lot was getting done about it,” he said. “It’s amazing that this could happen.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail, which apologised, said: “We are investigating and reminding our people of the correct procedure to follow when customers come to collect an item that we were unable to deliver, to ensure this does not happen again.

“We are arranging for a cheque to be sent as a gesture of goodwill to compensate for the loss of this item.”

The final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest will be held on Saturday, May 14.
