Angry Exmouth dog owner slams Royal Mail's new hours

A furious Exmouth dog owner says a ‘shambolic’ change in opening times by Royal Mail could have cost his animal dearly.

The Royal Mail sorting office in Church Street used to be open from 6.30am, but is now open from 8.50am, which Steve Cooper claims is unfair to people working in Exeter.

Mr Cooper had ordered heart medication for his 12-year-old Finnish Lapphund Taru and had only one tablet left before the medication finally arrived.

The 49-year-old plumber wants Royal Mail to explain why it has changed its opening times.

Mr Cooper, of Cliston Avenue, said: “We ordered medication from an online chemist for our dog because it is cheaper than going through the vets. Taru is off her back legs and it looks like she has had a stroke.

“We were out on Saturday and had a missed delivery note shoved through our letter box. I thought I would pick up the medication on my way to work on Monday, as I’ve done for many years.

“However, when I arrived at the sorting office, I found they had changed their opening time to 8.50am and they close at 1.30pm, which makes it impossible for people working in Exeter to pick up their parcels.

“In the end, my mum was able to go and fetch the medication.”

Mr Cooper added: “I think it is a shambles. When I got to the sorting office, there was a guy sitting in there with the door closed. If Royal Mail drivers start at 4am, then why can’t we keep the sorting offices open?”

Royal Mail has apologised to Mr Cooper.

A spokesman for Royal Mail explained the change in opening hours was because of ‘low numbers’ of people turning up at the sorting office in Church Street at the original time.

The spokesman added that there were a number of alternative ways to collect parcels.

He said: “We are very sorry to hear of our customer’s disappointment regarding the opening times of Exmouth callers’ office.

“The opening hours were changed three months ago due to very low numbers of customers attending the office at the earlier time. “The decision was taken to change the opening hours in order to accommodate greater footfall.

“We remind all customers that if they are not at home when we attempt delivery, we can arrange a free redelivery to their home or to a neighbour via http://www.royalmail.com/redelivery" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

“Alternatively, customers can nominate a preferred neighbour with whom we can leave items.

“They can also arrange free redelivery to another address in the same postcode if they can’t get to their nearest delivery office.

“In Exmouth, the Royal Mail enquiry office is located close to the post office branch, at which parcels may also be collected and dropped off.”

I'll have to remember not to "shove" things through but instead post them "gently" so as not to upset anyone in future.

Bad planning on behalf of the moaner.

Should've ordered when say half-way through the old tablets.

Should've left a note requesting where the postie could 'shove' the packet - neighbour, safe hiding place, local collect etc.

Or even been in himself.

Sounds like he's keeping the poor dog alive against nature.
