Outrage as arson attack on postbox in Buckley destroys contents

THE contents of a postbox were destroyed when it was set on fire.

A town councillor has condemned as “deplorable” the latest incident of anti-social behaviour in Buckley.

Cllr Mike Peers, of Buckley Town and Flintshire Councils, said he was saddened to see the postbox had been set on fire at the weekend.

Emergency services are now investigating.

Firefighters from Buckley were called to the scene outside the Horse and Jockey pub on Church Road at about 8.25pm on Sunday. A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters tackled the blaze but the contents of the box were totally destroyed.

Cllr Peers said: “It’s deplorable. We have been waiting on Royal Mail to deliver a postbox ever since the old post office closed.

“I hope the police can find out who did this because they have taken away a vital service, especially in such a well populated area where it is well used.

“This is an act that can’t be tolerated.

“It’s anti-social behaviour on another level.

“I would urge any members of the public who can help to please do so.”

Officers from North Wales Police were called at 8.35pm to investigate and a spokesman said a joint investigation was now under way between the two services.

The spokesman added: “Anyone with information should call North Wales Police on 101 quoting reference number U004650.”
