A LORRY driver narrowly avoided pulling down scaffolding after his truck became impaled on poles.
The quick-thinking Royal Mail driver slammed on his brakes as he realised the lorry was caught at the corner of London Road and Sumner Road in Broad Green at about 1am this morning.
Firefighters from Norbury and Mitcham, as well as Croydon's specialist fire rescue unit, were sent to the scene.
"The scaffolding had gone into the lorry body and luckily [the driver] stopped before it all got pulled down," said Glenn Coxon, manager of Mitcham's White watch.
Police closed the road while firefighters freed the lorry and made the scaffolding safe. No-one was injured.
