Over time not paid
Opened my wage slip today to find that only 4h46 of my 10h49 overtime was paid
Thats 6:03 underpaid. Got in touch with the boss of our office to see was there a problem with overtime and his reply was:
You and 3 others didn't get all what you put down, The reason being you's were either taking too long at getting out or taking too long on delivery compared to the rest of the office and that there was nothing outstanding to keep you's out. i.e.Breakdown
My response to this was: there comes a point where it becomes a joke, from Monday on i'm working to my contract hours! Do i need to contact the line manager and tell him this myself?
His response: If thats what you would like to then yes please tell him, i would leave it to tomorrow as he is off today and i have his phone, the other thing is i may not have a 6hr duty here in ........... for you as you are a reserve that covers holidays.
Can anybody help me on what i do next as i dont have a clue.

First you need to contact your union rep and explain about the pay. Then you need to find out what your actual start/finish times are and stick to them. It doesn't make a difference to you if he has no 6hr duties, no 5 hour duties, no 10 hour duties or no friends. Just turn up on your time and cut off, remember your breaks!

Re: Over time not paid
Did you follow the correct over running delivery procedure to be able to claim that over time in the first place? ie was the overtime authorised by a manager before you worked it?

Re: Over time not paid
That is outrageous. It's fifty quid in your pocket. Pursue it, please.
If you give in it will only get worse, I assure you - especially with the Christmas chaos looming.
If you choose to chase up these owed hours it may prove to be a great hassle, but until it is resolved to your satisfaction I would make it clear to everyone, colleagues included, that from this moment on you are arriving at your scheduled time, taking your permitted breaks, and walking out the door at the time you are supposed to - irrespective of what work there is still left.
You get no respect from anyone - management nor colleagues - for being a doormat.

Have you checked out the Overrunning Deliveries Procedure? I'll find the link in a mo. I think it will be necessary for you to be aware of the whole document.

Re: Over time not paid
It is not always apparent that you will be going into OT before you leave the office ZX as management well know. It is not always apparent until well into the duty, but then you phone the office only to find that the Dom has already gone home or you try getting through but the callers office closes the phone at 12:30. Most go on to do unpaid overtime rather than face a disciplinary for "wilfull delay" if they bring mail back. Dom then refuses to pay for hours worked.. It's a scam and a nice earner come bonus time for Doms.zx135 wrote:so it was authorised by your manager before you worked it?sunshinegirl wrote:it all is over running of duties,zx135 wrote:Did you follow the correct over running delivery procedure to be able to claim that over time in the first place? ie was the overtime authorised by a manager before you worked it?

Re: Over time not paid
that may well be the case but there is a set procedure in place before ot is paid out, if that can't be followed due to managers actions the rep should be sorting that out but if postie didn't follow that procedure he has no legal leg to stand on to claim overtime without prior authorisationenskied wrote:It is not always apparent that you will be going into OT before you leave the office ZX as management well know. Re: Over time not paid
Make sure you pursue it. If you work it, they must pay you it.
I was 1 hour short on OT from a manager & it took me 3, yes THREE weeks, to get 1 hour from the manger who did have a reputation for disputing some OT claims as if he was paying the money out from his own pocket.
I dealt with the manager directly I told him basically 2 things, he either pays me the hour or I'd be starting an hour later the following day. Then I told him if he doesn't want me claiming overtime in future because he had such trouble parting ways with 1 hour, then it's no problem, I'll bring all the mail/packets that I can't get done back & leave them in his office. It didn't go any further, he paid me the hour & I've never had any problems with OT from him since. It was about the principle of it though, if I'd let that 1 hour go though & let him get away with not paying it & not saying anything, then the next thing you know he'd be giving me some lapsing to do instead of my break.

Re: Over time not paid
So If i cant make the times that the duty holder does, its tough s**t i have to stay out and get it posted without pay!!!
I am a reserve everyday is a different frame maybe on that frame months apart, i be jumped from office to office and not one bit of thanks given from management, he stood me in the office one morning pressurizing me into giving a reason for overtime that the reason i was giving was not good enough, i broke down in tears to this cause i felt like he was telling me i was useless, too slow or not good enough
Now i have just about had enough from them, being made to feel its me! I rush round any run i'm put on , stop and talk to no-one, most times not stopping for my breaks. Im just at breaking point and need someone clearly to tell me whats what!

Re: Over time not paid
Again as I asked earlier did you get authorisation from the manager to claim that overtime prior to working it? ie before you went out that morning was there a conversation with the manger that made him aware you would be claiming overtime

This person is near breaking point. And you ask if she followed procedure?
How about she had never been told ? (no idea)
Show consideration (which I am sure you do)
Someone within the DO needs to help her (whether that be management or staff - though both are self serving)
This is not critical of you

Re: Over time not paid
There is an over-running procedure that most staff are never shown and for reserves it's not fit for purpose. Apparently you're supposed to have a discussion with management each and every single day on whether you can complete or not, very few posties do. They will then decide to take some off you or agree to pay you overtime. As you already know, unless you're the duty-holder, you have no idea if you'll be able to complete or not. And you could ask the duty-holder, but then you'll find that most don't even claim if they go a bit over because they sometimes finish early on a Tuesday, or make the time back in the summer.sunshinegirl wrote:So If i cant make the times that the duty holder does, its tough s**t i have to stay out and get it posted without pay!!!

The manager is bullying you. They have already won in a way as you are running around, not taking breaks and I bet you're not even claiming every minute you're going over.
The only answer if he's withholding overtime or being difficult to how much you can claim (what a load of bull) is to start working to you're time. But as soon as you do that you'll be even more of a target. If I were you I'd get union involved and also start writing a diary of everything the manager says to you and how you're being treated as you'll most likely have to raise a grievance. If at all possible have the rep or colleague with you every-time you have a meeting or discussion with said manager.
Try not to let this a****** wear you down.
