Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) In an effort to solve the problem of dog attacks, the Chunghwa Post Company (中華郵政公司) has equipped some of its postmen with tennis racquets and dog treats, and trials in the Beitou (北投), Neihu (內湖), and Muzha (木柵) districts of Taipei in the past six months proves it can be a good solution.
The post company reported that in the past four years, there were 2,045 dog attacks on postmen, especially those delivering mail in remote areas.
To protect the postmen, the post company bought 300 tennis racquets for postmen to ward off vicious dogs, but many postmen were reluctant to carry them because it was not convenient and seemed impolite to the families receiving the mail.
Dog treats were then considered as an alternative to the tennis racquets, and the solution was well-accepted. Not only did the postmen find the cookies effective, but also the monthly cost of NT$2,000 for the dog treats was affordable for the Post Office.
Meanwhile, the Post Office warned households with dogs that have a record of attacking postmen should take preventive measures or risk stoppage of their mail deliveries.
