Royal Mail suspended deliveries to part of Leeds after "repeated air rifle attacks" on postmen

Royal Mail has revealed it suspended deliveries to part of Leeds last month after a string of air rifle attacks on postmen.

The company stopped taking mail to a number of addresses in Holbeck following several incidents at the end of October.

Michael Scott, who lives on Runswick Place in Holbeck,said: "We heard that one postman was delivering at the top of our street when he was shot in the back of the head.

"He turned around to try to take a photograph of who did it and was threatened with being shot in the face.

"They stopped bringing our mail. It was an inconvenience, but you can understand why. It's unbelievable really."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail confirmed deliveries were suspended in the interests of staff safety.

She said: “Deliveries to a number of addresses in Holbeck were suspended for three days at the end of October following repeated attacks on our staff with an air rifle.

"Deliveries have now been reinstated and we apologise to any customers who have been inconvenienced.

"The safety of our staff is of the utmost importance to Royal Mail and suspension of deliveries is always a last resort.”

She said all incidents were reported to police and the staff involved were not seriously injured.
