Village of Hett turns to YouTube to save Super Kev the Postman

A SMALL village is fighting a big campaign to keep its much-loved postman from being redirected.

Villagers in Hett, County Durham, say Kevin Wind, their postman for the last 11 years, provides a first-class service and they hope to stamp out any talk of him being despatched to a new post.

A petition is said to have attracted several hundred signatures and one resident has turned to 21st century technology to save the old fashioned, gentlemanly service he has come to value so dearly.

Alan Prudhoe has penned a protest song, Super Kev the Postman, and posted it on YouTube.

Praising his happy smile, neighbourly attitude and gently mocking his habit of wearing shorts in all weathers, ukulele-playing Mr Prudhoe sings: “Please don’t move our Kevin, he’s the best we’ve ever had.

“So Royal Mail we beg you, listen to our pleas; and please don’t move our Kevin, the postman with bare knees.”

The wily pensioner jokes of a campaign of civil disobedience, with villagers putting the wrong stamps on envelopes, delivering their own Christmas cards, writing shorter letters, leaving the postcodes off their mail and an extremist faction prepared to go as far as covering address labels with sticky tape so the postmark rubs off.

“He cares,” said Mr Prudhoe.

“He goes above and beyond the call of duty. For some elderly people, they know they’re going to see someone every day.

“He’s always smiling. He never complains. He’ll go to the end of the world to find someone to accept a parcel.

“He knows everybody and everybody knows him. He’s just so friendly.”

Mr Wind, 49, who has been a postman for 18 years and lives in Sunderland, said: “The support has been absolutely overwhelming.

“There are people stopping me all the time, so much they’re making me late now.”

Spokeswoman Morag Turnbull said the Royal Mail was pleased the people of Hett had received such an excellent service, but added: “We need to continually review our operation in the light of falling mail volumes and a change in what we deliver – fewer letters and more parcels.

“As such, some customers may notice that a different postman or woman will deliver the mail.

“However, we can assure customers that all our staff are trained to the same high standards and quality of service will be maintained.”

The petition to keep Mr Wind serving Hett, Croxdale, Sunderland Bridge and surrounding areas can be found at Croxdale’s shop, Croxdale Club or The Daleside Arms. It will be submitted to Royal Mail on Monday (November 2).
