Hundreds of people have backed a postman fighting to return to his job after being accused of stealing mail.

More than 800 people have signed a petition launched by David Mitchell, who won his employment tribunal against Royal Mail.

Mr Mitchell, 57, was dismissed from Cupar delivery office for gross misconduct, alleged to have stolen cards containing money and gift vouchers.

A judge ordered Royal Mail to reinstate him after finding there was no clear evidence he committed the thefts but the company has requested a reconsideration hearing.

Mr Mitchell’s online petition demanding that judges’ decisions be final in UK employment law was signed by more than 800 people in six days.

Customers have shown their support for the postie, of Chance Inn, who is a volunteer driver for Age Concern, demanding he be allowed to back to his round.

Signing the petition – which has been set up at the change.org website and is directed at Prime Minister David Cameron – former customer Nichola Martin wrote: “I trusted him implicitly with delivering my mail and it saddens me greatly that my ‘community’ postman has to fight this injustice.”
