One of the country’s longest serving postmen – who survived being shot in the Second World War when a bullet hit his pay book – has died.

Percival Reed joined the Post Office as a telegram boy aged 14 in 1939. He was finally told to retire in 2007, at the age of 82.


One of the country’s longest serving postmen – who survived being shot in the Second World War when a bullet hit his pay book – has died.

Percival Reed joined the Post Office as a telegram boy aged 14 in 1939. He was finally told to retire in 2007, at the age of 82.

In all, Mr Reed, who lived in Barnstaple for last six years of his life but was born in Lynton, worked for the Post Office for almost 58 years.

He was called up for National Service aged 18 in 1943. During the Battle for Caen, he was shot. But the bullet hit his pay book in his left pocket, therefore saving his life.

He spent his 21st birthday in France before returning home on the hospital ship.

He rejoined the Post Office after the war, working through the Lynton flood disaster in 1952. He finished his career as a cleaner at Lynton Post Office.

Mr Reed died last month at the age of 90.
