Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
Hi my office has just finished its full revision all walks have been adjusted ect and I'm sure allot of you would have gone through this already or very soon too.
I have a argument the revision is done and on Monday the re-sign started around 90 duties available, sadly I'm above 90 on the outdated ridiculous seniority list so will not have a chance to sign for a duty. Having had the same walk for 18 months I'll now go back to what's called a floater no stability any walk on any given day.
Is there anything I can do to request a chance to sign for a walk / dutie ?
I totally disagree with the seniority list and think it's a outdated scheme , equal opportunity for all employes ect ect well Royal Mail you have failed there I've been a postman for 4 years but someone who has been employed 4 years 1 day has more opportunities than me ? but that's a argument for another day .
Back on point I would basically like to see if it's possible to get a chance at signing for fir something regardless of my so called seniority ?
Thanks In advance I don't hold much hope but it's worth a shot maybe someone else has been in a similar position .

I know how you feel I had 6 years service left for 1 year and and now been back around 4 but counts for nothing !Stevepostie2 wrote:Been in the job 10 years and still a full time reserve.
I'll be arming myself with s argument today( rest day ) and putting it to the Dom I'll be putting a request in writing and asking for good business reason why they cannot allocate me a walk . Don't think I'll get far but worth a shot this is the next few years for me and I want to at least try.

Van sharing .. ask your senior mate to pick you ... it does not matter about your low seniority. At least you will have your own walk ..... Its happing in our DO.

Re: Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
Unfortunately not really any other way to pick up a duty,
there are arguments for and against seniority but at end of the day what would you replace it with? and at least it's completely transparent and not open to being fiddled by the dom

Re: Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
We have been van sharing for a few years now and I very much doubt my Dom will allow people to choose their partners in this way , we have a few couples working in the office and for them to stay together the lower seniority partner has to give up there position and drop down until it's there partners turn to pick allowing them to stay together. My partner has gone for a driving role so will be working alone anyway.Gold Fox wrote:Van sharing .. ask your senior mate to pick you ... it does not matter about your low seniority. I'm going to argue and argue this out with the Dom / managers this is the next few years of my life I would like some stability not working all over with different people everyday and doing 80% the work while a part timer turns up bags up and sits in the van while I rush around doing oversize and organise everything . Being Punished for being efficient is going to be no longer I'll be working to my time if I get messed around .

The text book response it's transparent , yes we can all understand how it works. It's not up to me to replace the system and I have no future plans of putting a solution forward and it's not my job to do so and it like many things will fall on def ears .tomdub85 wrote:We have been van sharing for a few years now and I very much doubt my Dom will allow people to choose their partners in this way , we have a few couples working in the office and for them to stay together the lower seniority partner has to give up there position and drop down until it's there partners turn to pick allowing them to stay together. I know it's a argument I'll never win but just really trying to see if anyone has been able to bend the rules or get around it and as selfish as it sounds jump up the list .
Like I said before this is the next few years of my working life being decided by a list

Re: Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
You will probably feel differently when you have a few years behind you and a bit of seniority, How will you feel if a newbie ..friendly with dom..took a duty that you could have had, by way of seniority. Older posties tend to have the benefit of seniority and so can choose the better duties (if there are any!). Get older, start feeling the rigours of the job, so entitled to the less strenuous duties...seems fair to me

Why should someone who has put in more years than you wait to get a round just because you're a nob?
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Yeah, lets get rid of seniority so the new blokes can crawl around the governor and get the good duties.

Because in the modern work place we are all equal. Just like freedom of speech your entitled to your opinion on which body part you think i may be or not be be.Judgee wrote:Why should someone who has put in more years than you wait to get a round just because you're a nob?
It's a outdated system that needs to be replaced so that everyone has a fair chance. Most people will disagree and I'm sure they are also the people more than happy because they get got to pick from a wide choice of walks while the rest of us cover your days off holiday and sick. I prefer routine in my days work and other like change.
I would go as far to say its discrimination against newer employees, why should I be any different to someone who has worked for the company for 20 years longer ?

Or maybe I could ask the union rep ? Ow No cant do that he's number 15 on the list and after that driving duty we all know can be done in half the time of any other .

Re: Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
The problem with Royal Mail is that management are all about something called top boy which if you work hard for them then they will reward you and if you don't they will sanction you. In the age of zero hours contracts and part time working the only thing stopping managers from ripping contracts up are things like seniority and unions, try coming into work and being told that there is no work for you today but maybe if you come in tomorrow there maybe some part time hours or a 2-10 shift in the next town. You may feel discriminated against because you haven't been around for long but keep your head up and when the next sign or a walk become vacant choose,it doesn't take long really and I think is the fairest way round things.

Re: Re-sign Seniority list . Revision
Just because it's ' a modern workplace' doesn't mean seniority hasn't got a place. Seems fair to me and i'm sure the majority of posties that time served is as good a place to allocate duties as any other. Without seniority it would be dog eat dog. I'm sure everyone knows the individuals who crawl round the managers for o/t, favours etc who would land up with the pick of duties. Seniority or becoming a lap dog...i know what i would rather have.tomdub85 wrote:Because in the modern work place we are all equal.
