Greenham wiped off the map by Royal Mail

GREENHAM has been effectively scrubbed off the map after Royal Mail stopped using the settlement in its latest addressing system.

That was the concern brought forward by Greenham parish councillors at a parish meeting held there recently.

Former chairman of the parish council Patrick Planterose, who stepped down recently, wrote a letter to the council, which explained that rather than identifying addresses as within Greenham they are being classed as either Newbury or Thatcham on the full address.

Acting clerk Heather Westbrook said in response to the letter: “We need to do something about this and contact Royal Mail and say that we are not happy about this.

“We need to contact Royal Mail and make it known that we are not happy that Greenham isn’t being recognised as a settlement.”

Julian Swift-Hook said of the issue: “It is right I think that it is Royal Mail doing it for their convenience.

“As far as getting our post delivered I don’t think there’s a problem because to be fair to the Royal Mail they provide an excellent service.”

He went on to add: “Greenham is one of the largest parishes so it seems bizarre that we are not recognised.”

Vice chairman Chris Austin agreed: “We have either got to just lump it or write to them and explain who we are and where we are.

“When the Racecourse and Sandleford is built we will be the third biggest community in West Berkshire.

“Greenham shouldn’t be lost as a consequence of this.”

Councillors added that the new residents of the two new developments may not even realise they are in Greenham if Royal Mail does not make any amendments.

It was proposed and agreed by councillors that the parish council would raise the matter with the Royal Mail to express their concern.

Royal Mail was approached for comment but did not respond.
