Hero postman saved Kingston Blount man's life

A POSTMAN saved a man’s life after pulling him from a burning house he was trapped in near Thame this morning.

The unknown hero had been doing his morning delivery round when he heard smoke alarms and saw smoke coming out of a property in Bakers Piece, Kingston Blount.

The postman entered the house and poured water onto a kitchen table which was on fire.

He then helped a man who was on the floor leave the building, while a neighbour called the fire service.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the house fire at 11.42am.

Fire crews from Watlington, Wheatley and High Wycombe were sent and gave the elderly man first aid and oxygen until the arrival of an ambulance.

An ambulance crew checked both the resident and the postman. The elderly man was taken to hospital for further checks and monitoring.

Incident commander, station manager Marcus Reay said: “The quick thinking and brave actions of the postman prevented the fire from getting bigger and assisted in saving the gentleman’s life.

“Without the fire being quickly extinguished it would have produced a lot more smoke, which would have further limited the chances of survival for the occupier.”

“In addition to this, the working smoke alarms could be clearly heard from outside the property, initially alerting the postman to the fire.”

Mr Reay said it was believed a lit cigarette that had caused the fire and the humble postman did not want to be named.
