Residents say the TV show reflects badly on the whole seaside resort and drags down their property prices


Jaywick, one of the country's most deprived towns in the UK is the backdrop for the upcoming Channel 5 show "Benefits by the Sea"

Residents in a village the subject of Channel 5 documentary Benefits by The Sea have asked Royal Mail to remove any reference to the estate from their address because it drags down their property prices.

The Brooklands area of Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, is listed as the most deprived area in England and had already become the subject of ridicule after Benefits Britain, another Channel 5 show, aired earlier this year.

About half the residents in Brooklands are on benefits and the most recent programme is following a group of people on the estate in a bid to show the reality of life on the breadline in this tight-knit seaside community.

But in other parts - such as the nearby Tudor Estate, which is mostly made up of retired bungalows residents say the TV shows reflect badly on the whole seaside resort and their calls for the change have intensified in the wake of the new show.


According to government statistics, the sleepy seaside town of Jaywick, Essex, is officially the most deprived place in England.

Royal Mail bosses have agreed to look into it.
Resident Bill Humphries is leading the campaign and wrote to Royal Mail initially to have Jaywick taken off his own address.

But in response, Royal Mail wrote to all 1,006 homes in the Tudor Estate asking for views on the move.

Ronit Wolfson, a company spokesman, said: "Following a request from a resident, Royal Mail is consulting on removing Jaywick as the locality for a number of streets in the Tudor Estate area of Clacton."

Residents have three weeks to oppose the plans and if fewer than 20 per cent lodge complaints, the change will go ahead.

But James Ennifer, of Sheens Estate Agents, said the move would not necessarily lead to an increase in house prices.

He said: "The change will make some people feel happy, but Brooklands and Tudor are very different places anyway."

"Benefits by The Sea shows follows characters such as 60-year-old Disco Dave, who claims he has not been sober since he was 15.

Royal Mail moves to drop Jaywick from leafy estate addresses after resident demands

RESIDENTS on a leafy estate have welcomed proposals by Royal Mail to drop the word “Jaywick” from their addresses.

Homeowners on the Tudor Estate, north of Jaywick village, were left angry following the airing of Channel 5’s documentary series Benefits Britain earlier this year.

The programme featured the Brooklands area of Jaywick – officially the most deprived area in England – but residents on the Tudor Estate area said the fly-on-the-wall show reflected badly on the whole area.

Residents said their estate, which is mostly made up of retirement bungalows, should to no longer be classed as part of Jaywick because it dragged down property prices.

Bill Humphries, of Marlowe Road, wrote to Royal Mail demanding Jaywick be taken off his address.

Royal Mail has now written to residents on the Tudor Estate backing the plan to drop Jaywick from postal addresses.

Royal Mail spokesman Ronit Wolfson said: “Following a request from a local resident, Royal Mail is consulting on removing Jaywick as the locality for a number of streets in the Tudor estate area of Clacton.

“Residents have three weeks to lodge a complaint against the proposals.

“Jaywick will no longer form part of the address of the affected streets unless at least 20 per cent of residents state their opposition to the change.”

Royal Mail has written to 1,006 homes to ask residents if they object to the change.

But James Ennifer, of Clacton-based Sheen’s estate agents, said the move would not necessarily lead to an increase in house prices.

“It could help for insurance purposes, but people have always looked on the Tudor Estate as part of West Clacton anyway,” he said.

“Tudor is a very popular development because it is quiet.


“Removing Jaywick from the address could mean some people are more encouraged to go there, but it would not necessarily mean an increase in house prices.

“The change will make some people feel happy, but Brooklands and Tudor are very different places anyway.”
