The rising popularity of naming your house

TO name or not to name that is the question. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of people giving their property a name rather than a number.

Research from Halifax bank shows The Cottage is the most popular name choice for a home.

This rise is apparent on new-build properties where developers ask buyers to name the land incase there is changes with the number of plots available.

Rose Cottage and The Bungalow take second and third place with favourite names.

Anyone can rename their property provided your home already has a number, and the local council do not need to be contacted.

The new name can be added to an existing postal address, but the postal number cannot be deleted from the address. The property name in this case will not officially form part of the property address; therefore the property number must still be displayed and referred to in any correspondence

Ronit Wolfson, Royal Mail spokeswoman, said: “To ensure mail goes to the correct delivery office and direct to the customer, we require some information as standard.

“These are the postcode, post town and street name. Our postmen and women tend to have a good level of knowledge of the local communities they serve, but it is extremely helpful if customers clearly signpost their property with the number/name of their home and their name. It doesn't make a difference to the sorting or delivery of mail if houses have a name rather than a number."Richard Evans, of
Frank Innes Estate Agents in High Street Burton, said: “The view that having a house name makes a property more valuable is not something I have ever noticed. Although house names to tend to be on properties which are naturally a higher market price due as they are normally in a better area with a higher demand.

“I have sold two houses on the same street that were next door to one and other, one with a name and one with a number and they sold for virtually the same price."
