Two police cars are wrecked and a post box demolished after officers are in head on smash on a quiet country road with absolutely nobody else around

The marked police Vauxhall van and the Ford Kuga patrol car were left blocking the road following the crash.

Traffic was stopped on the road between Brecon and Sennybridge for 90 minutes to allow breakdown trucks to tow the vehicles away.

But police refused to confirm whether or not the vehicles had crashed because they were speeding to a 999 emergency call.

One motorist who arrived on the scene minutes afterwards said: 'I can't understand how it happened. It was a clear day on a straight stretch of road.

'The vehicles hit each other head-on and it caused a lot of damage. It was fortunate no-one was killed.

'But the van must have been travelling at some speed because it was very badly damaged and looked like a write-off.'

Police said both vehicles were out of action while the extent of the damage, believed to run into thousands of pounds, was being assessed.

The drivers of the two police vehicles have not been arrested or suspended after Friday's accident. An investigation into how it happened is still being carried out.

A Dyfed-Powys spokeswoman said: 'The circumstances are being investigated and both vehicles are non-operational.'

Royal Mail officials said the postbox will be repaired and re-installed at the roadside in the hamlet of Penpont.
