Dave Ward officially starts as CWU general secretary

Today (Monday), newly elected Dave Ward officially begins his five year term of office as the general secretary of the Communication Workers Union.

Dave Ward was previously the CWU's deputy general secretary (postal) since 2003.

The CWU is the biggest trade union in the communications sector with over 200,000 members across the UK working in companies including BT, Capita, EE, O2, Parcelforce, the Post Office, Royal Mail, Santander and UK Mail.

Dave Ward GS General secretary of the CWU, Dave Ward, said:

"It is a huge honour and a great privilege to begin today in representing CWU members as their general secretary.

"This is a crucial time now for the CWU and for the wider labour movement.

"The communications industry is a fast changing industry, with many challenges facing it in all directions in the coming five years and beyond. It will be my top priority to ensure that the CWU plays a leading role in the development of the communications industries and that the protection and enhancement of CWU members' pay, terms and conditions is at the heart of everything we do."

"There are also five years of a Tory government with the prospect of further austerity. I will lead my union in the fight against austerity and the anti-trade union policies of this government.

"I know that our members need their voices to be heard in the work places, in the Parliaments and across the media of our country - and I pledge to do this over the next five years."

If he stopped playing politics and got on with representing his members,he might well do. Doubtful though.
