Union which represents 5,500 Post Office operators calls emergency meeting

The union that represents 5,500 post office operators has called an emergency meeting next month that could see it merge with another organisation in a bid to get more clout.

The plan would mark the end of an era for the National Federation of SubPostmasters, whose membership has shrunk over the years raising concerns for its future.

The organisation recently sent a letter to members outlining its options, which include merging with the Communication Workers Union or the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

A third option would be to draw up a memorandum of understanding with the Post Office under which it would remain ‘a specialist organisation representing all post office operators’, it said in the letter.

In a statement last night the union said: ‘Branches will still need strong representation and support to help sustain and build their businesses.’
More than 1,000 sub-postmasters have quit following a revamp of the network, with compensation thought to exceed £75 million.
