Lapsing

1. Can a DOM force staff to take lapsing before their duty? to scare people into completing lapsing as well as their duty causing them to go over.
2. We have an agreement of lapsing on first day of sickness. How come it is now being implemented on a weekly basis when there is no sickness?
3. Can members be sent to other offices to allow for lapsing to happen?

1 yes, but staff should still cut off if they need/want to and the request should comply with the agreed resourcing plan which takes into account model week traffic

2 lapsing can happen anytime under the pay and mod national agreement not just on first day of sickness

This appears more of a resourse to workload situation, if there is capacity on your/or the duty you are covering then so be it, if not then it is down to the individual to decide if they want or not want to overun simples really , checkout Fishtanks posting on over running deliveries

Dom's tell you to do the lapsing first so you feel more obliged to complete your own walk if you are going to run over.

if you are still going to be over your time inform Dom of this and put the ball in his court.

Also worth pointing out, his approach can easily back fire against him, think about it this way mail is going to fail, higher up don't really care about number of items more about number of walks, doing it this way he is going to have to say 7 or 8 walks failed rather than just the lapsed one, that will make him look bad

just do what he wants you to do within your contracted daily hours , then just cut off and take it back for him to deal with , no problem. oh and don't go in early or forfeit your m/r or take short cuts like some idiots do in our office to get it done.

Lapsing is there to take you up to your finish time. To do it first and have to overrun or cut-off seems to go against the whole point.
Tell them you haven't time. If they insist and you don't feel like an argument, then tell em you'll do it on the end if there's time.

basically when you have an office of people with the majority of 25+ years on the same duty day in day out they want to complete their rounds even if they do overtime.
What they dont want to do is lapsing - taking into account most claim overtime daily (and are happy to on their own duty!)

The rule is that little line that's at the top of every duty 318 which states "as directed" as long as it's a reasonable request there is not much you can do. So if that means taking the lapsing and doing it first and cutting off on their "own" duty then that is the dom decision to make.

Whether lapsing should be getting done or not is a different story but if it is then dom is perfectly entitled to tell you when to do it

Everything that happens inside a DO should be by agreement, that's the basis of the AFG agreement, anything outside of that, unless it's as a result of unforeseen circumstances would be considered a change to working practices without agreement or what's known as executive action, this is specifically against our collective agreements and would take it outside what is considered a reasonable request.
A reasonable request is not a license to do anything they want.

if they want it done before simple return to office after lapsing for toilet before commencing own duty
they only ask it to go first to save hrs as they expect it done on route ie as if extending your own duty

From experience I would say that DOMs use this "do the lapsing first" in offices with a high number of piss takers. People could do it but don't/won't.
I work in an office where this is apparently the rule but I do my lapsing when it suits me.
Depending on the duty being lapsed I either do it at the start, in the middle or at the end.
Nobody cares as long as it gets done and I don't care as long as I have time to do it.

You shouldn't be cutting off with lapsing,whether you do it 1st,2nd or in the f***ing middle!

I told my manager the other day I needed to leave 2 loops in order to complete, the next day was similar but they said we were starting lapsing, he said do it first it's only two bundles he said, I said ok but on my walk today I need to leave behind 2 loops and 2 bundles from a 3rd loop.
