Union debates 'worrying' trade deal

A controversial trade deal being negotiated between the European Union and the United States is to come under fresh attack for its "massive impact" on any future campaign to renationalise the Royal Mail or BT.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) will discuss opposition to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) because of a number of "worrying clauses" contained in the proposed agreement.

The CWU's annual conference will be called on to oppose TTIP by campaigning within the trade union and Labour Party movement.

Opponents claim TTIP would lead to public services including health being privatised, but backers insist it would boost jobs and business

Delegates at the Bournemouth meeting will be told today that campaigns to bring the Royal Mail and railways back into public ownership and to halt privatisation of the NHS will be more difficult if TTIP is approved.

"This agreement will contain 'investor protection' clauses that would allow foreign companies or investors to sue the UK government for the loss of future profits and would make the renationalisation of previous state companies almost impossible due to the rights that would be afforded to corporate interests under TTIP," reads a motion due to be debated.

Opponents have warned that TTIP would lead to public services including health being privatised, while companies would be allowed to bring claims against the government at an international tribunal.

The Government has argued the deal would create new jobs and give a huge boost to business, especially smaller firms in the UK.

Just read this TBT , was about to paste it up myself ! another example of who really calls the tune , Corporations or the Government ? unless Labour really challenges the framework that has been laid down by these Corporations and the Capitalist Elite and ably executed by its Conservative Puppets , is there any point in voting? there seems a line drawn in the sand and Labour seem unwilling to cross it.
