Many of you have been contacting us asking why the Sorting Office in Brook Street, Neston, is currently closed for collection of mail and parcels.

We have been trying all week to verify the facts, but as even Royal Mail's own Customer Services department cannot seem to get through to the Office, we will have to go with what we have been told informally.

There appear to be two separate issues at play. Firstly, the security shutter on the front door became defective over a week ago, leading to the pathway to the door being taped off and a notice appearing to direct people to 'go round the back.' However, as we understand it, that option has been cut off due to health and safety issues. A new sign was placed on the entryway, advising people to call a number, but many of those who have tried to use it have not been able to get through.

The second problem has been to do with staff sickness. As the Office has been under-staffed, the usual phone number is not being answered, hence people trying to arrange collection or re-delivery of parcels have been frustrated.

For the moment, as we understand it, collection in person is not possible. We have been advised by the main Customer Services department that anyone wishing to arrange re-delivery or payment for an item can do so online here. Alternatively, call 03457 740740 and select the 're-delivery' option.

We will advise as soon as we have any further update.

Many of you have been contacting us asking why the Sorting Office in Brook Street, Neston, is currently closed for collection of mail and parcels.

ParcelsWe have now received a response from Royal Mail.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: " We apologise to customers in parts of the CH33 and CH64 postcode areas who are unable to access the inquiry office at Neston Delivery Office in Brook Street, Neston CH64 4AA to collect or post items.

"This is due to a mechanical fault with the roll shutter door on the front of the building. The fault is being repaired as a matter of urgency and in the meantime we would ask customers who wish to pick up a parcel in person, to contact the number on the card left at the address - a local delivery office number - so that we can arrange for a Royal Mail employee to meet them at the inquiry office entrance to hand over the item.

"Please note, the inquiry office opening hours are Monday-Friday 07:00 - 13:00; Saturday 07:00-11:00.

"For safety reasons, we ask customers not to access the delivery office via the yard where Royal Mail vehicles are located and which are in constant use.

"We will always attempt delivery first time and we would remind customers there are alternative delivery methods, including re-delivery to the same address, delivery to neighbour, delivery to a specified address in the same postcode area and delivery to the nearest post office branch."
