A man who helps keep the streets of North Weald clean and a postman praised for his acts of kindness have been named joint winners of the 'Going That Extra Mile' category of North Weald Bassett Parish Council's annual Citizen of the Year awards.
Stephon Brown, a local road sweeping operative, received glowing testimonials from a number of residents who said that not only does he keep the village streets of clean but he is also very helpful to residents.
Postman Chester Stuart was honoured not just for being an efficient postman but for being very helpful to the elderly and disabled, helping people across the road and undertaking other such community actions.
Joint winners of the individual award for voluntary services to the community were Margaret Mulliner and Elaine Davis
Margaret, who lives in North Weald, and regularly helps at the monthly ploughman's lunches, the North Weald branch of the Royal British Legion, North Weald Village Hall, North Weald Bassett Preservation Society and other events such as litter picks in the village and around the village hall.
Elaine, who lives at Thornwood Common, is a member of the Parish Hall Management Committee and has taken an active role in the car park fund raising effort. She is also a helper at the village hall and North Weald Airfield Museum, contributes to the newsletter and is the newly-elected allotment warden for Thornwood Common.
North Weald Bassett Preservation Society picked up the group award for protecting the environment. The society meets monthly and appoints tree wardens, organises litter picks and takes an interest in local issues.
The aims of the society are to preserve the concept of the Green Belt, preserve buildings of historic or architectural interest, preserve and encourage the planting of trees and hedgerows, preserve and encourage the use of rights-of-ways, and stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty and character of the area.
The group award for providing a service within the community went to North Weald Library Knit Lit Group which meets weekly at North Weald Library. Members meet to discuss books, take along their knitting and offer advice.
North Weald Bassett Parish Council chairman Cyril Hawkins, who presented the awards during the annual parish assembly at Thornwood Village Hall on Monday, said: "The calibre of the nominations was very strong and the quality of the winners shows just what a community-minded place North Weald parish is.
"The awards allow the parish council to applaud the contributions that both individuals and local groups make to ensuring that North Weald, Hastingwood and Thornwood are truly great places to live."
