The blaze was started in the yard of the sorting office on Lacey Street, Stretford, shortly after 11pm on Wednesday (March 4).
Firefighters from Stretford station extinguished the flames before they spread to nearby buildings, but could not save the van.
Police were informed and are now investigating the fire, which is being treated as deliberate.
Will Ward, from Stretford fire station, said: "The site is fairly secure so we had to break into it.
"The van was not completely destroyed but it is unlikely to be used again."
Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Yeah it's probably still better than some of our vans, still what a relief the fire didn't spread to the D.O. !
