A LANDMARK building on Omagh’s High Street is to be re-opened later this year as part of a major scheme by Royal Mail in the town.
The former head Post Office became vacant a decade ago and has been largely empty during the intervening period. The rear of the building holds the town’s Delivery Office. But now Royal Mail, which owns the site, has announced that it’s going to open a customer service centre and revamp the sorting office.
Work on the project began last week and is expected to take until April to complete. “We can confirm that work is taking place in the former Post Office building at the front of the Royal Mail Delivery Office,” said a spokesperson. “It will be used to situate a new enquiry office for customers in the front counter area and also increase the space within the delivery office for our mail operation in Omagh.
It is expected that the work will be completed in April this year. “There will be improved facilities for customers who are enquiring about parcels from Royal Mail and also for the staff who are working in the Sorting Office at the rear of this building.”
The large building was erected in the early 1960s, having previously been the White Hart Hotel and an important first port of call for those coming off the railway into Omagh.
In 2005, the front of the building became empty when the Post Office moved their services to Supervalu. A major refurbishment of the Post Office there has also recently been carried out as part of renovations. New signage will also be erected on the facade of the building and it is hoped the work will help to revitalise the upper end of High Street.
