LTB 029/15 - Gerry Ryan NEC Member
No.029/15
Ref: GS1.1
Date: 19th January 2015
To: All Branches
Dear Colleagues
Gerry Ryan - NEC Member
It is with deep sorrow that I have to advise you of the sad death of Gerry Ryan, CWU NEC member and member of the Capital Branch.
Gerry was a dear friend and work colleague to many in the union and wider labour movement and he will be very much missed by us all.
Gerry joined the Post Office Engineering Union (POEU) in 1975 when his employment commenced with the GPO. He became a workplace representative in 1984 following which he held various branch roles including Branch Financial Secretary, Branch Secretary and Branch Chair. He also held the position of Regional Chair and Regional Political Chair. He remained the Capital Branch Political Officer. Gerry was also a National Members Auditor from 2004 -2009.
Gerry was a member of the Labour Party - and in 1998 became a Labour Councillor in the London Borough of Croydon representing the ward of Selhurst.
He campaigned tirelessly for the party and delighted everyone in 2010 when he was selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Croydon Central. Gerry was unsuccessful in his bid to become an MP but this did not dampen his enthusiasm and determination to campaign for a future Labour victory. He was a dedicated public servant whose work for his constituents won him the respect of Councillors across the whole of the Council.
In the CWU Gerry was a great organiser of workers. He worked tirelessly to recruit and organise members, particularly in the non-recognised areas. He was elected onto the Telecom and Financial Services Executive in 2009 and became a member of the National Executive Council in 2013.
Our thoughts are with Gerry's family, particularly his wife Jackie and his two sons. I will on behalf of the CWU convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to them.
When further information is known about the funeral arrangements details will be forwarded to branches. Any enquiries on this LTB should be forwarded to the General Secretary's Office, gsoffice@cwu.org quoting the reference GS1.1/LTB 029/15.
Yours sincerely
W HAYES
General Secretary

Labour And CWU Man Ryan Dies At 57 http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/a-f4 ... L53FEesWHM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
TRIBUTES poured in yesterday to CWU activist and Labour councillor Gerry Ryan, who died on Sunday aged 57.
Mr Ryan, a stalwart of the Labour Party Irish Society (LPIS) and long-serving councillor in Croydon, south London, fought the marginal Croydon Central constituency for Labour and the Co-operative Party at the last general election.
Former London mayor Ken Livingstone offered his condolences on Twitter. He described Mr Ryan as “a committed and genuine … activist who was widely liked and respected.”
Labour NEC member Conor McGinn said: “For me, Gerry was first and foremost a great friend and a loyal comrade.
“He was a smart, witty, sincere man who was rooted in community and wedded to his values.”
LPIS treasurer Liz McShane added: “He loved going to Glastonbury to fundraise for LPIS even in atrocious weather conditions. Some of the stories he would tell me afterwards about trekking through muddy, sodden fields to find his tent just filled me with dread.”
