Tributes following tragic death of Olympic cyclist

An Olympic cyclist from Whittlesey has passed away aged 46.

Tributes have come in for Gary Dighton who finished 14th as part of Great Britain’s 100km time trial team in the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Mr Dighton, whose death is unexplained, was found last Friday (9 January) and already tributes have come in.

His brother David (52) who lives in Snoots Road, Whittlesey, said: “He lived for riding a bike. He used to cycle 250 miles plus a week. He was very popular.”



A Facebook page called ‘RIP Gary Dighton’ has also been set up. One poster to the page wrote: “A legend and a gentleman. Very sad indeed.”

Mr Dighton’s Olympic journey began with him riding at the Fenland Clarion Club.

He worked in the offices of the Royal Mail before later moving to Wareham in Dorset.

Mr Dighton joined cycling club Poole Wheelers in 2010. A committee member posted on their forum: “We are beyond devastated - Gary leaves a hole that can not be replaced.

“Gary had been very low for some time.”

Mr Dighton leaves behind a widow and two children.
