SIGNATURES are scribbled across them on doorsteps throughout Britain and they play a key part in making sure your Christmas presents get to the right address.

But many of these handheld digital devices depend on a Notts company to keep them up and running.

Barcode Warehouse, based at Newark, supplies and manages a whole range of devices which keep the country's home delivery industry on track.

The festive season is the busiest period of the year for the home delivery industry. But it's one which barcode Warehouse has been building up to for months.

"We have 170,000 devices on support, and one of our customers is doing a million consignments a day," says the firm's founder, Ross Lee.

"We scale up with staff to offer enhanced support, but this is a period we've actually been working towards for several months."

A family-run firm based on Telford Drive in Newark, Barcode Warehouse is a former Nottingham Post Business Awards winner, and has grown rapidly in recent years.

It employs 200 people – up from 160 a year ago – and has a turnover of more than £34 million. It also invested more than £2m expanding its operations into an additional building

Sales are set to grow even further after it secured a five-year multi-million-pound deal to work with Royal Mail.

"We already support Royal Mail and it's great to be working with them on this scale," said Kevin Mutton, Barcode Warehouse's managing director.

"This give us real confidence that we're number one in the market and makes us feel the sky's the limit."

Barcode Warehouse has been in business for more than 20 years, having started life as a small-scale labelling firm working for local food companies.

Today, it is a technology-driven company which works with high-profile clients including Parcelforce, Hermes, City Link, Whistle and DX Group.

"We're all about the management of parcel-tracking technology, and we partner with software providers, airtime providers and all those areas that connect people with parcels," said Mr Mutton. "We're growing strongly and there is still great potential in our existing markets.

"But we are also looking at other markets where there are large estates of devices to manage, and the fact is that more and more companies are using mobile technology for business-critical activities."

Though Barcode Warehouse has grown substantially, it remains family-owned and run, with Mr Lee joined in the business by his son Ross junior, daughters Sharon and Joanne and son-in-law Lloyd Jury.

"Even though we now have 200 people inside the business, it's still got a family feel," added Mr Lee. "It's had an entrepreneurial culture from the start, but we now combine that with corporate discipline."

Are these the people supplying our new PDA's?? Wonderful, trouble is, the existing ones won't last 5 years. We need them today.
