Thieves reportedly tried to tried to blast a cash machine from the wall of a post office and stole a five-figure sum from a Post Office.
At around 1.05am on Wednesday, police responded to reports of a loud explosion and a group of men attempting to remove an ATM machine from the wall.
Emergency services attended the scene on Main Street in Cumbernauld village however nobody was injured as a result of the incident.
Detective Sergeant Cameron Miller is asking any witnesses to get in touch.
He said: "The people responsible for this crime have not only stolen a large amount of money, they have also caused significant damage to the building.
"It is important they are traced as quickly as possible and I would appeal to anyone who heard or saw anything in the area around that time to come forward, no matter how minor they think their information may be.
"Some of the witnesses we've spoken to so far have reported seeing a group of men wearing masks and dark clothing around the location before entering a light coloured Audi motor vehicle.
"A second car, possibly a Volkswagen, was also seen near the premises around that time."
Enquiries are continuing with officers working through CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
