Northamptonshire postman stole £10 Next gift card from letter on Christmas Eve

A Northamptonshire postman has admitted stealing a letter containing a £10 Next gift card and a charity package containing a torch and snack box.

John Collins, aged 36, of Stokes Road, Corby, appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with fraud, criminal damage and two counts of theft.

The court heard Collins has been employed as a postman for two years when a member of the public reported the fact a letter, containing a £10 Next gift card had never reached its intended destination after being posted on December 24.

Stephen Moore, prosecuting, said, following investigations with Next, it was discovered the card had been used to buy a child’s pink swimsuit.

CCTV footage then revealed Collins entering and leaving the store on the date the swimsuit was bought.

Mr Moore said the remains of four postal packages were found in a bin in an A45 lay-by near where Collins had parked his car on February 27.

Collins pleaded guilty to all the charges against him and sentencing has been adjourned until next month.
