A resident has launched a petition in an aim to get Royal Mail to fix a fallen post box in Burgess Hill.
John Burke, a retired resident of Ashenground Road, began a petition on Sunday to get Royal Mail to repair an old-style brick pillar-box at the corner of Sheppeys and Ashenground Road which fell to the ground on Easter Monday.
Within half an hour the petition collected 41 signatures. It calls for the repair and reinstatement of the existing box on its present site now.
The Middy reported last week that John wrote on May 31 to the Royal Mail’s chief executive, Moya Greene, without getting a reply.
Royal Mail has said that it has not replaced the post box yet because a number of surveys and checks have to be completed first.
John said: “Royal Mail’s excuse if pitiful. It’s only £50 worth of work. It means that some residents, including many pensioners, must now go a mile to post their letters.”
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We are in the process of replacing this postbox.
“There are a number of checks that have to be made before a new postbox can be erected, including underground services, local authority planning checks as well as a review of siting. This schedule is in progress.”
A resident has also complained that a collection point at Sainsbury’s, in Haywards Heath, has been removed without any prior warning to shoppers.
Royal Mail spokesperson Sally Hopkins said: “Royal Mail has ceased collections from the private posting box within the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Bannister Way, Haywards Heath.
“This box was privately owned by a third party who was paying for a collection. This arrangement has now ended and collections have ceased. Private posting boxes do not form part of Royal Mail’s network of 115,000 post boxes that we collect from daily and maintain.”
